The Church put out a document, part of which was a clarification of the theological status of revelations. In it Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger clarifies the difference between public revelation and private revelation. He writes:
“The liturgy (public revelation) is the criterion, it is the living form of the church as a whole fed directly by the Gospel. Popular piety (private revelation) is a sign that the faith is spreading its roots into the heart of people in such a way that it reaches into daily life.â€
The Cardinal added:
“Such a message can be a genuine help in understanding the Gospel and living it better at a particular moment in time; therefore should not be disregarded.â€
