Why Does Our Lady Sometimes Speak in Aramaic?

Why Does Our Lady Sometimes Speak in Aramaic?

Special Edition

June 21, 2026 A.D.

A Friend of Medjugorje goes deep into what Our Lady does, as much as what She says. He has always understood that everything Our Lady says and does is significant and has a purpose, even if that purpose is not defined specifically by Our Lady. He does not only look to Our Lady’s words, but how She acts, how Her manner or mood may change from one apparition to another, and if She left a sign or a clue to a deeper mystery in an apparition. This is part of a Friend of Medjugorje’s unique and special charism: to see beyond what others see in Our Lady’s apparitions and in Her words.

Over the past five days, there has been a common detail in each of Our Lady’s apparitions on Apparition Mountain, yet it goes unnoticed by most, skipped over in order to get to the meat of the message. And yet, to understand why She is doing this adds richness and deeper levels of understanding to Our Lady’s words.

Because no meaning or purpose is ever given to why Our Lady chooses to do this one thing from time to time, it is easy to overlook. Not so with a Friend of Medjugorje. He always questions Our Lady about why She does certain things. Our Lady responds to his prayers by giving him insights that help to answer his questions.

Having followed Our Lady for 40 years and studying intently everything She says and does, he has picked up many nuances of Her character and manner within these apparitions that place him in a position of authority when he shares the insights he has been given by Her. For that people follow him in over 190 countries around the world.

What follows is a Friend of Medjugorje’s thoughts regarding a specific action of Our Lady every night in Her apparitions during the novena on Apparition Mountain. It is a beautiful meditation that will help anyone who truly desires to encounter the true essence of “the Mother” not only during these special anniversary days of Her apparitions, but whenever one desires to enter into the presence of Her love.

Why Does Our Lady Sometimes Speak in Aramaic?

During this 9-day novena on top of Apparition Mountain (which started on June 16th and will end on June 24th, Our Lady has been speaking in Aramaic every night. Why does Our Lady, on occasion, speak in Aramaic, the language of Her earthly life?

The first question is not why She speaks Aramaic. The first question is why Heaven would find it necessary to remind us that Mary is real.

We live in a time when everything is becoming artificial. Relationships are artificial. Communication is artificial. Even faith can become artificial—something we know about rather than something we live.

But Our Lady is not an idea. She is not a symbol. She is not a religious figure frozen in stained glass.

She is a real Woman.

She lived in a real village. She walked real roads. She carried real water jars. She spoke a real language. She held the Son of God in real human arms.

If She occasionally speaks in Aramaic, perhaps Heaven is reminding us that the Gospel is not a story. It happened.

The same lips that once called Jesus to supper. The same voice that taught Him the prayers of Israel. The same Mother who stood beneath the Cross. The same Woman who was present at Pentecost. It is that voice which still speaks to the world today.

Why is that important?

Because the world has become detached from reality.

The messages of Medjugorje are a call back to reality.

Reality is prayer. Reality is fasting.

Reality is conversion. Reality is the family.

Reality is God. Reality is Heaven.

And reality is that Mary is alive.

There is another possibility.

The language of a mother is the language of the home.

A person can learn many languages, but the language of childhood remains hidden deep within the heart. It is often the language that surfaces in moments of great emotion, great tenderness, great love.

Could it be that Our Lady occasionally speaks in Her own Motherly tongue because She is speaking from the depths of Her motherhood?

Not because she needs to.

But because she is Mother and she wants to speak to her children in an intimate way.

There is also a warning in this.

People become fascinated with signs.

They want secrets.

They want extraordinary events.

But if Our Lady speaks Aramaic, the most important thing is not the language.

The most important thing is that she is speaking.

A mother does not come to analyze words. A mother comes to save her children.

The tragedy would be to spend years discussing the language while ignoring the message.

What has She been saying for over 45 years?

Pray.

Fast.

Be converted.

Return to God.

Put God first.

Live the Gospel.

If a mother tells her child every day to come home, the most important thing is not whether she says it in English, Croatian, Italian, Spanish, or Aramaic.

The most important thing is that the child finally comes home. Perhaps that is the deepest reason.

Aramaic is the language of the Gospel age.

The language Our Lady spoke.

The language Saint Joseph spoke.

The language spoken in the home of Nazareth.

The language Jesus Himself spoke during His earthly life.

Its occasional appearance reminds us that Medjugorje is not about something new.

It is about returning to what is oldest.

Returning to the Gospel.

Returning to the family of Nazareth.

Returning to the Mother who has never ceased searching for Her children.

And perhaps, every now and then, Heaven allows us to hear an echo of Nazareth itself.

Strictly speaking, we cannot know with certainty why Our Lady occasionally speaks Aramaic unless Heaven itself explains it. But as a spiritual reflection, it carries profound meaning.

Aramaic was not the language of a great empire.

It was not the language of power, wealth, conquest, or prestige.

It was the simple language of a humble people in a small corner of the world.

Yet from that humble language came the words spoken by Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and the Apostles.

One could contemplate that when Our Lady speaks in the language of Nazareth, she is not choosing one nation over another.

Rather, she is speaking from the place that existed before all our modern divisions.

Before there were Americans, Croatians, Italians, Chinese, Nigerians, Brazilians, or Australians, there was a young woman from Nazareth whom God chose to become the Mother of all mankind.

At the Cross, Jesus did not say, “Behold your mother” to one race, one language, one culture, or even one generation.

He entrusted Her to all mankind.

The motherhood She received beneath the Cross extends across every boundary that separates human beings.

When Our Lady comes, She does not come as the Mother of the Croatians. She does not come as the Mother of the Italians, the Americans, the Africans, the Asians, or the Europeans.

She comes as Mother. Before you are anything else, you are Her child.

In that sense, Aramaic could be seen not as a particular language, but almost as a reminder of Her origin—the place from which Her universal Motherhood entered history.

There is also a beautiful connection to eternity and this is reflected in Our Lady’s homework assignment on the 3rd day of the novena when She said:

To pray for all the deceased, for our entire lineage and all our descendants, so that our Lord might protect them from all evils and from all the sins they have committed, and so that they may ascend from Purgatory to Heaven and be united with Him. In this way, She asked us to pray for all souls and to do penance for all souls, especially for those in purgatory.”

The Church speaks of the Communion of Saints—the living and the dead united in Christ. Our Lady’s motherhood is not limited by time. She is mother to:

• Abraham and Moses,

• the Apostles and martyrs,

• the saints of every century,

• those living today,

• and those who will be born long after we are gone.

Her maternal heart spans the whole human family.

One could therefore pray:

Mother, when you speak in the language of Nazareth, remind us that beneath all our divisions we belong to one human family; that every race, every nation, every culture, every tongue is gathered beneath your mantle; that the living and the dead are united in God’s plan; and that your desire is to lead every soul, from every age and every people, to your Son.

That thought also resonates strongly with Medjugorje itself.

Pilgrims come from every continent, speaking dozens of languages, often unable to converse with one another.

Yet they kneel together, pray together, confess together, and attend Mass together.

In a small way, Medjugorje becomes a living image of what Our Lady’s universal motherhood looks like:

many languages, one Mother;

many nations, one family;

many peoples, one call to conversion and peace.

Perhaps Aramaic, the language of Our Lady’s earthly home, serves as a quiet reminder that before mankind was divided into countless camps, God had already prepared one Mother whose heart would be large enough to embrace them all.

Love from Medjugorje,

Friend of Medjugorje

P.S. Last night in the apparition (June 20th), Marija said that Our Lady prayed a much longer time in Aramaic over everyone present. Marija then said that she did not understand a word of what Our Lady prayed, which caused a ripple of laughter among the pilgrims.

But it raises the question, how can we be in union with Our Lady if we do not understand what it is She is praying for over us?  Our Lady many, many times throughout the years has told us to:

“Pray for my intentions.”

One such time She said:

December 15, 1988

“Dear children, I love you and wish you to pray for my intentions with the love you have for me, so that every plan of God about each one of you may be fulfilled.”

When we pray for Our Lady’s intentions, we don’t have to know Her specific intentions. We know She can only ask for the very best for all of us. We can simply say, “Dear Mother, we unite our prayers with yours and pray for the fulfillment of your intentions that you offer on our behalf before Your Son and the Father.” In that way we are fully united to Our Lady’s prayer.

The same Virgin Mary that taught little Jesus how to read, is the same Virgin Mary Who is teaching us today as Her “little children” through Her Medjugorje messages.

A Note to Those Who are New to the Writings of a Friend of Medjugorje

A Friend of Medjugorje has pulled out so much from Our Lady’s messages for over four decades. He literally digs gold out of Our Lady’s words in hundreds of ways. He is in a league of his own regarding his contribution to helping the world understand everything having to do with Medjugorje.

Just one read of a message and he speaks or writes, with Our Lady’s words flowing onto the paper (with pen, no computer), what he has learned from Our Lady in the 40 years he has been following Her. He first learned of the apparitions in 1983, and from that point forward, he dived into learning everything he could about Medjugorje. This became his life’s work and calling, his vocation.

As a Friend of Medjugorje responded to Our Lady, She responded to him by filling his mind and heart with inspirations, inspired by Her messages. What She shows him to do; he obediently sets out to accomplish Her desires. He is the most prolific writer on Our Lady’s messages worldwide. There is no one who is even a close second. To be able to break open the messages and “mine the gold” within them is a gift given to him by Our Lady. It is not only his writings, but what he accomplished physically in the place Our Lady sanctified at Caritas in Alabama that will be his testament, after he leaves the earth, of what it meant to follow Our Lady during the time of the grace of Her apparitions.

His many, many books and writings have flowed out effortlessly onto paper through the years because he has understood the essence of the messages and their connectedness not only to each other, but to the history of the Church and the world in which we live.

In 1993, he built The Tabernacle of Our Lady’s Messages in Alabama, and a large printing facility was created and dedicated entirely to propagating Our Lady’s messages within the building. The printing press in Our Lady’s print shop at Caritas has printed over 65 billion sheets of paper, all about Our Lady, that have been spread across all countries around the world.

What a beautiful writing. Thank you! During these days of this Novena I have experienced trials & difficulties that almost prevent me from praying at the appointed time. I kept asking myself “why?” and yet, although I had always believed that Our Lady is truly appearing in Medjugorje – I’m not sure I truly believed she was speaking to me personally. Well, through a series of “coincidences” that at this point cannot be coincidences, I now know she is & I wish I could explain it all here. During my difficulties this week, I have asked Our Lady several times for a “Random Message” from your website here. The messages have been stunning in their directness to my questions. Today, I was given a message basically telling me God was sending me trials daily right now in order to teach me to pray more and to increase my patience and love. I head into these next three days of fasting with the greatest respect and love & to testify that Our Lady is more real, and more personally involved in the lives of those who persevere in following Her messages than you can imagine. Sorry to have written a small book here!

  2. How beautifully said. One Mother, one people, one faith. My heart is filled with this special connection and thank you for allowing Our Lady’s message be opened and revealed to us with your writing. I’m very touched by this gift you have shared with us. Thank you and may Our Lord and Our Lady continue to bless you as you are blessing us with your words. Our Lady Queen of Peace and Reconcilliation, pray for us🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

During these Novena apparitions, I was reminded of the time when I sat on top of Apparition Hill, …. 1990 in the dark….., gazing down upon the city below, all lit up. I have experienced the same thing in this Novena through the live cam.

What I was reminded of was that while I sat there with my family and with a thousand or more people in the dark, from every nation…praying the rosary……I realized that we were all praying together in our native languages, and all waiting anxiously for our Holy Mother to appear and speak to us as her children, regardless of what language we spoke. Can you not see that THIS is a miracle in itself?!?!? I did not hope for any big miracles in Medjugorje, at least the kind many people were looking for, but boy I did experience some interesting small ones and insights….ones that made ALL the difference in my family and my life. The above was just one example!

So thank you Terry for revealing the many insights that God gives you in regard to Our Lady. They are REAL miracles too!

In All that our Heavenly Mother has asked of us these past days of the Novena, I can’t help but feel if we honor her requests that our prayers and supplications will be given an increased efficacy of graces as she brings them to the Heavenly Father. She is Mother of all people and she has no favorites.
Mother Mary, we ask you that by our prayers and supplications that you bring us in line with the Divine Will and all that God is asking of us through you and your apparitions. I pray for the complete and quick triumph of the Divine Will in all creatures so that we may live together in love, peace and unity on earth as it is in Heaven.

      Thank you for your words.
I never really understood or thought about a lot of things. But I’m going to start reading and praying very hard, that I can get back into my old ways of being close to The Blessed Mother.
It’s taken so long for me to come back and understand.
