While It’s Quiet, a Look at Medjugorje

St. James Church in Medjugorje

(Medjugorje photo taken on Friday, August 19, 2011, 7:53 PM) – The easily recognizable twin towers of St. James Church in Medjugorje, one of the most famous churches in the world.

The Medjugorje world has been relatively quiet the past few months. Even the Anniversary on June 25, which is usually attended by thousands, also passed very quietly.

This past weekend we shared the news about the Diocese of Mostar receiving a new Bishop, Most Rev. Petar Palic. Before that, as far as the Church is concerned, Medjugorje was placed under the jurisdiction of the Holy See. In 2017, an Apostolic Visitor, Msgr. Henryk Hoser was sent to Medjugorje on behalf of the Holy Father, Pope Francis. Since then, official Diocesan pilgrimages have been allowed to take place while other Church developments are being looked at.

In the whole scope of Medjugorje, while all of these developments are working according to God’s plan, we do want to point out something very important, and is something which a Friend of Medjugorje wrote about back in 2010. It helps us to understand how to view Medjugorje, not just when something new comes out, but all the time. He writes:

Many approach Medjugorje with too much intellectualism. They are filled with it, which allows little or no room for them to be completely opened to Our Lady’s messages… Medjugorje cannot be approached through complexity and the mind filled with intellectualism.

from Medjugorje, Always More Thank You Think – May 2, 2010

Again, a Friend of Medjugorje directs us back to the messages. Nothing complex, or any need to try and guess what the Church is going to do next. The messages is why God is sending Our Lady. She is speaking to us. One can get caught up in what the Church is going to do next, or developments in the parish, or sometimes even in defending or trying to prove Medjugorje. A Friend of Medjugorje always points us back to Our Lady and the messages. Living Her messages is the real proof to the Church and the world of what God is doing in Medjugorje. It is what helps Our Lady fulfill Her plans. In these days, go back to the messages.

  1. One of the disturbing things I see at many holy sites? How people treat it like they are going to a tourist trap. Snapping pics, selfies, non stop browsing in stores looking for trinkets etc I was in Medjugorje last year and I was so grateful we had a local guide who is a devout catholic. Shop till you drop in Split, Dubrobnik, Rome prior/after yet while in medjugorje, confess your sins, go to mass, and let God’s grace overwhelm your soul. When you cannot stop crying as you move from repentance to pure joy, you will understand what Medjugorje is all about
