We Are Called to Proclaim That God Exists

We Are Called to Proclaim That God Exists

Fr. William Elder of the Archdiocese of New York gave the following homily in St. James Church in Medjugorje on October 21, 2010:

Welcome to Medjugorje. My name is Father William Elder and I am a priest of the Archdiocese of New York. I have been here, I may have lost count, but over 30 times. And permit me, I just want to savor this moment. It has been about a year and a half since I have been here last. It is so good to be back. I feel, in so many ways, that this is home. In so many ways, this is Our Lady’s intentions, and in so many ways, we experience ourselves here as a family. Now, you don’t know me. Your have just learned my name, that is about it. A good number of you know me because I have heard your confessions, but other than that, we don’t know each other. But yet, there is this tremendous grace, there is the tremendous presence, and it is Our Lady which makes us all one family.

Fr. William Elder, from New York, celebrating the English Mass in St. James Church on October 21, 2010.

I have to say, on a serious note, as an American priest, speaking for myself, as an American, and for you Irish and for the pilgrims from Canada and elsewhere, we not only share this grace, we share a burden, and we share a sorrow. It has been going on now for a many number of years, and it is very much connected with our celebration today of priests, and you know what it is. Those of you from Ireland have experienced more recently what we in the United States have been going through – this terrible scandal. And, the result of that has been a loss of faith on the part of some. And, the result of that has been, as you and I know, it seems like it is a field day when it comes to attacking the priesthood itself. That is what is under attack, and you and I today need to pray for priests.

What are priests about? Priests carry out what Our Blessed Mother said when She first appeared here. Very early on, the Blessed Mother said very simply, and I have repeated this so many times here and elsewhere in homilies about Medjugorje: “I have come to tell you that God exists.”

Why are there so many attacks on the priesthood, beyond what is justified? Obviously there is a lot of justification, and there is a lot of repentance that needs to take place, but there have been attacks beyond that. Why? Because, the priests proclaim, as the Blessed Mother has, “I have come to tell you that God exists.” The priest, in all his frailty, in all his humanity, is our key to Christ and to God. So, we have all these attacks on priests and others.

One of the reasons our Blessed Mother calls us to Medjugorje is that we need to remember God exists. God is alive. God calls us and God chooses us. Every one of us is called to proclaim that God exists. In a particular way, priest and others are called to proclaim in a very public way that God exists. I brought with me, to this Mass, two visual aides. They don’t want me to talk about them, but I am going to mention a little bit about them. I won’t even mention their names. They are two members of the Community of the Sisters of Life, a religious community founded by John Cardinal O’Connor in the Archdiocese of New York nineteen years ago. They were founded to proclaim the Gospel of Life. The Gospel that proclaims every human life has infinite value to Our Lord. They spend their lives in prayer, in penance, in fasting, and in working to build up life in many different ways. They are here to proclaim publicly that God exists. Why would a young woman choose to give up a life in the world to live a very disciplined life, to spend her life in a very quiet way, usually hidden, a life of self-sacrifice, a life of giving? Why? Because God exists! Because she has experienced God in her own life. Why are all these priests and deacons here in the sanctuary? Because God exists!

We have all been touched by God’s love, and we proclaim to you, and Our Blessed Mother proclaims to you, and you yourselves are called to proclaim that God is not some remote entity. God is very near to us, in our hearts. Christ is very near to us. So we come here to Medjugorje to experience, not just the fact of God’s existence, but to experience something of Who He is. The Incarnate Son of God proclaims, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing. There is a baptism which I must be baptized, and how great is My anguish until it is accomplished.” Those are the words of the Incarnate Son of God. He came to be close to us. He wants to set us on fire. That is why we are here, to receive the grace of God’s forgiveness. It is such a privilege for me and all the priests to hear the confessions of the pilgrims. We priests know, this is where the power is. This is where the fire is. This is where God sets our hearts on fire. The Lord Jesus Christ came to give His life for us, so great is God’s love. The Holy Spirit is the fire of God’s love. That is our God and He calls us to let Him come close to us. So He can set our hearts on fire with His love.

Here in Medjugorje, Our Blessed Mother asks us to open our hearts so God can give us the riches of His gifts: the gift of His forgiveness and healing, the gift of new life. God calls us to open our hearts, through prayer, fasting, and the Rosary, and let God come and gift us with the fullness of His riches. Then He calls all of us to proclaim that God exists! – Fr. William Elder

From Medjugorje.com: To some, the idea of proclaiming that God exists is a sweet one. However, according to Our Lady’s messages from Medjugorje, it is something that should be a change of mentality and a belief that spurs us to action. A Friend of Medjugorje wrote in Look What Happened While You Were Sleeping the following, which is true not only for office holders and people of the United States, but for every person in every nation:

Many office holders today publicly profess belief in Christianity, but their actions are atheistic, thereby proving what they truly profess in their heart. In essence, an atheist would not have a proper conscience to be credible in upholding the oaths, testimonies, decisions, and judgements rendered. This shows us that no one needs to be sensitive to an atheist’s belief or accommodate them on a level constitutional playing field. This statement of not accommodating atheists on a “level constitutional playing field” may stun many mentalities. If it does, you must change your mentality, adapting back to the old mentalities that guided this nation right up to a few decades ago. God is God. He exists, and for a professed atheist to believe that He does not exist, does not cause God’s existence to cease. So who do we honor? The atheist or God? Who do we respect? The atheist’s belief that God doesn’t exist or those who believe He does exist? Both cannot be accommodated equally. One will offend; one will be offended. It is one way or the other. So whose way is to win out? Throughout the last decades, it has been the atheist’s mentality. However, it is time to make all things right. An atheist does not have an equal right to prevail in his views or to be accommodated in law. He has the right to excuse himself, nothing more. The Christian attitude toward the atheist or non-believer is to be one of love and respect. The atheist has a free will to choose not to believe. He does not have a right to impose his belief and mentality into our laws or institutions.

On the other hand, as a Christian nation, we have a right to impose Christian principles into our laws and institutions and to expect behavior based on them. It is to the advantage of the atheist, pagan, Christian and those of all other faiths to be governed in all of society by the “principles of Christianity.” It is to the disadvantage of atheists, pagans, Christians, and those of other faiths to be governed in all society by atheistic and pagan beliefs. There is no need for studies and research to examine this truth. In former times, all abided by Christian principles, even those who did not believe or practice a belief, and society was generally safe, wholesome, and righteous. Now many abide by secular atheistic principles and society is unsafe, loathsome, and unrighteous. The situation is now rapidly digressing into a grave crisis for our nation, endangering our continuance.

  1. I noticed that you speak about Caritas originating the 3 Hail Mary’s devotion in this article. This was actually started by St Anthony about 800 years before. He was a loyal servant of Mary as you probably know. I have also noticed that often in your articles that the writer builds up his and the communities’ status by such comments. This is very contradictory to the actions of our new humble Pope Francis.

  7. Friend of Medjugorje and all at Caritas thank you for all of the work you do to promote Our Blessed Lady’s messages from Medjugorje. I had not realised the significance of the date of Pope Francis I election, I now see Heaven’s hand in his selection as Pope. May God and Our Blessed Lady bless and sustain him in his papacy. Praised be Jesus!

  9. This is the time of Graces. Our Lady give us the Humble, down to earth, father, Pope Francis 1.I cannot stop crying for joy. As we the Holy Rosary and Divine Mercy. And see the white smoke, on the roof of the Vatican, with the bird Segal flying around the top. This bird is sign of cleaning up the whole world. Thank You, ABBA FATHER, LORD JESUS, WITH HOLY SPIRIT, YOUR POWERFUL WORK WAS SEEN TO THE WORLD. In prayers, Rose

  11. Lordship Father Pope Francis, how I wish You will be able to help Jesus’ flock here in Sri Lanka too. The injustice that is done to us by some of the Bishops and Clergy is unspeakable. My children have even been asked by a priest to convert to Muslim. They are called “behaving like animals” “greedy – badajaaru” in Sinhalese. A Bishop is even trying to change the law of the land and distribute our land the way he wishes, a land given to us by our government. He is suggesting to my family, division in our family. My old mother has been robbed from our home with her belonging and is in a Home for the Aged run by the Nuns to ensure that the 50% of property is with the Clergy.Lord Father Pope Francis is there something Your Lordship can do to bring about faith among these Bishops and Nuns who think that Lord cannot do anything. They do not have even the mustard seed size faith that we have in the Lord, who is a Just Judge and has revealed to us how this has happened.

  17. When we entered into the year of 2013 I called the year of Mary. Prior to the white smoke it came to me that it is Marys time ,with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI announcing his retirement on The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and to add to the 3/13/13 with the election of Pope Francis, it was also 13 days since the seat was vacated. I adopted a cardinal from the Congo and prayed the Miraculous Medal novena for him and my understanding is we are to pray 3 days after the election. So there is the Trinity and Mary.I am grateful to witness this in my time. As Cardinal George mentioned the other day, when Pope Francis was to come forth it was “Dark” and now we are as a church getting ready to enter into the new springtime. Time of Joy!!Peace Cathy

  18. We send our love with prayers for Our Lady and Pope Francis to bring HIS message of peace, love and joy to us.

  19. Mary our Mother be a mother to us always guide your church until the end , protect us from the snares of the world, we love you pray to your Son Jesus Christ to protect us

  20. Shirley Russell

Dear Members of Caritas and Medjugorje:Thank you so much for working so hard for Our Blessed Mother Mary and her son, Jesus. They love you and all of us so very much. It is uncomprehensible that she visits this earth so often to remind us of her son, Jesus and all that He has done for us and how He wants each and every one of us to come back to Him, as He is Our Good Shepherd and wants all of us to join Him and the Blessed Trinity and Our Lady in Heaven when we die. But Jesus and Mary also want us to pray for ourselves and others, so that we can get the whole world to Heaven. Thank you, dear Blessed Mother of ours and dear Jesus Our Savior of us all. We love you. Shirley

When this man emerged onto the balcony for a few minutes I was very unsure of what would be coming ? Then Pope Francis began and immediately tears of joy began streaming from my eyes. The Humility of 1st asking and leading prayers for Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI and then asking for prayer and bowing in a humble stance reinforced the reverence we all have been shown by this Vicar of Christ and St Francis of Assissi devotion and practioneer is such a Supernatural Gift from the Intervention of the Holy Spirit !I sense this wonderful man will bring not only unity but an Outspoken Charismatic openly preaching and teaching the truths of our beloved Catholic Faith especially regarding artificial contraceptives, (abominable) marriage and adoption and the secularization many countries are imposing on Christians who oppose them and their heathen way of twisting truth

  22. Hortencia Nuñez

A Friend of Medjugorje was right. The most Holly Trinity has given mankind through Our Lady “a fraction of time, a short, extra period of grace” to decide for holiness and conversion. Let all of us use this time well. Pray, pray, pray… as Our Lady always requests, as Benedict XVI retired to do, as Pope Francis started his pontificate, praying and asking for prayers.

  23. I thank our Lord and our heavenly Mother by giving us our new Pope Francis. My recent visit to Assisi, the home town of St Francis, gives me a much stronger feeling now for this new humble Pope. I trust that he will lead the faithful to walk with God but not the trend of the current world. We pray for God’s blessings to him for good health and wisdom to lead the Church in this different time.

  25. Beautiful, absolutely beautiful — what a special time that we are living in. It is no coincidence that this most humble cardinal was chosen to be our leader. As Our Lady states, this is a special time of grace that we are living in! Our Lord God is working miracles every day! Lord, please help us to understand the gifts that you are sending us on a daily basis and help us to be servants of your Word and transmitters of your message!

  26. Here’s something else about our pope having been chosen, or hand picked by Our Lady on 3-13-2013….add all these numbers up individually and you get 13! the 13th of the month is always Our Lady of Fatima’s day.Today Pope Francis placed flowers at the altar of Mary Major Church. I also read today that he persoanlly practices the 5 First Saturdays our Lady requested at Fatima. How Blessed we are!!!

  28. I was watching the TV and saw the white smoke pouring out of the Sistine chapel….it was the first time I have ever seen it live and it was very moving. I have been very moved by this humble, prayerful man and his gesture this morning of leaving flowers for Our Lady at St Mary Major. How wonderful that Marija had a collage of all the Cardinals with her during her apparition. Heaven’s signature has been writ large over all the recent events.

  30. It is such an awakening for all that you do. It seemed like the church was not out there in full. The more we learn about the Virgin and Jesus giving us messages from Heaven, the stronger our beliefs will grow and get stronger. Big thank you. God Bless You.

We thank Our Holy Mother for her intercession in choosing the Pope. May she always be at his side to guide him, Holy Spirit and Blood of Jesus cover him. Thank you Lord for your holy son.

  32. We have been offering a decade of our rosary each nite since Lent started for our future Pope. I know of many who have been praying for a good and holy man to be brought forward to lead us all. Here where I live it was the 3 o’clock hour in which he came out to speak and it was a wonderful sign to me that our prayers have been answered. I will pray daily for our Pope Francis!!!

  36. I love the display of cardinals you made. Marija must have been so pleased to have one also. I was in adoration when the white smoke was seen. I was so surprised to hear of it on the radio as I left the church. I then realized it was the 13th of the month, the 13th having significance to Fatima, I felt very reassurred that this Pope had been Our Lady’s choosing. Arriving home it was a bit of a wait to find out who the New Pope was. When hearing that he chose the name of Francis, I again thought it a good sign….thinking that St. Francis renewed the church in his time. Certainly Our Lady will be guiding this Pope Francis in renewing the church in our times. Thank you dear Caritas Community for posing for that wonderful picture…it’s like having a little piece of all of you in our home. What a truly BLESSED time we live in.

  38. Is there any way to send an email with the list of the Cardinals with their names, date of birth and country of origin? I had a urging to have this printed in the newspapers and any news people asking for it. I have no idea why this is important, but ask that Marija help with the answer. In any case can you send copies of the poster out in email form.

We need to wait and watch any changes that will accure in the Dogma’s of our Holy Church and the Rubrics of the Holy Mass..I hope like everyone else does this, Pope is from Heaven Saint Malachy, Garabandal, and others suggest not..Just don’t be asleep keep watch at all times. We don’t need another book that has the Title Look what Happened while the Church was Sleeping..I find it strange that two polar opposites Saint Benedict was chosen and Now Saint Francis for the first time..What does that mean?..It is no secret Benedictians and Franciscans have not always gotten along.

  43. I wondered about the significance of the 3-13-13 date yesterday, thank you for explaining that. I am also thrilled with the election of this new pope, I believe his commitment to social justice and living example of living a humble and simple life is exactly what our world needs in this time of consumerism. In America, the divide between rich and poor is growing rampantly; I hope that many will pay attention to the guidance of our new Pope.

I really enjoyed the children’s project of making a picture of all the cardinals and praying for them. I too adopted a cardinal to pray for. I feel it is very important to pray for protection for our new Pope as I really feel he is called by God. I know that we have a segiment of the Vatican that is not walking in Truth and I pray that the Lord will cover Pope Francis with Psalm 91 and that Mother Mary will come close to him and St. Francis will guide him on his journey as our Father and guide for our Church. Thank you for your wonderful work and may Mother Mary protect us all and our Church will never have the Gates of hell destroy what God has ordained. God Bless, Gwen – This is a time as never before for us to say our Rosaries. May all your community be bless and protected and that Medjugorje be accepted by this Pope.

  45. It is with great relief, I write that I am extremely happy with the Conclave’s decision to elect Cardinal Bergoglio as our new Pope. To learn of his humility and commitment to a more normal life, such as catching buses and cooking for himself, gives me confidence the conclave’s decision was what was needed for our time.

  50. Thank You Jesus and Mother Mary for giving us a humble Pope, a father who can lead the Church on steadily, toward safe shores.

  51. Such a blessing to read Fr. Elder’s homily and your words, especially, in this critical time of voting in USA. In AR our Bishop (past & present) have instructed our priests, deacons, to be silent on Medjugorje. We know, in HIS time, Our Lady will overcome all obstacles.

  53. Thank you, Caritas, for continuously updating us with what is happening in Medjugorje. It is indeed a source of unending grace. How I wish everyone would hear of it. And that among those who hear about Medjugorje, would do something about it.

  54. God truly exist! I returned to Catholic faith. I believe on the Medjugorje apparitions. It is so obvious it’s from heaven. The message is about love, conversion, Eucharist as the center of our life, prayer, confession, and fasting. All of these are obviously the message from God because He loves us and He wants to save us from eternal death. Fear is a great hindrance. Fear of persecution when God/Jesus is mentioned. Most don’t even believe in Genesis which is the foundation of Christianity.
