Lives are sometimes changed, altered or shattered for years, decades, lifetimes through unforgiveness or anger. Where is the exit, and how can we get there?
Pilgrims praying at the foot of the Cross on Krizevac in Medjugorje. On the Cross Jesus took all man’s sins. But, man still suffers on account of his own sins and it takes a lifetime to convert.
People are sometimes changed, altered or shattered for years, decades, lifetimes. Hurts and wrongs committed against us, affect our life. However, the greatest hurt is against Jesus, Who forgave. So, for those in pain, suffering in unforgiveness, where is the exit, and how can one get there?
Fr. Jozo, the parish priest of Medjugorje when Our Lady first appeared in 1981, said:
“…I’ve so often seen people closed up, who do not receive the benediction. They remain empty… I came across one such case this very morning. It was a mother and her two sons. They were happy because the husband and father was dying… It seemed to them that this man was persecuting their family. The sons had refused to love him because the mother did not hold him in her heart. When I told this mother in front of her sons: ‘You, you hate. You have not forgiven your husband.’ She screamed out: ‘How can I forgive him? I cannot forgive him! And you, you hate women!’ It was terrifying to hear that. I told her that she had made slaves of her children, that they were unhappy and I asked her: ‘What are you expecting? What is it you want? First you have to forgive, then pray and weep. But you cannot pray. You are deceiving God, you are deceiving yourself. Your life is but hatred and your sons also suffer. There is no other way but to forgive.’ All three began to cry. They vowed to pray and fast so as to be able to forgive.”1
A Friend of Medjugorje wrote in Harboring Anger and Resentment Will Eat You Up:
“…Are you finding that your prayers aren’t being answered? Is it because you are harboring anger, bitterness, unforgiveness in your heart for someone, or even unforgiveness of yourself?”2
Our Lady of Medjugorje said on March 28, 1985:
If you are looking for an exit to the situation that you cannot find a way out, prayer is the exit, and the way to joy. Why be a slave to unforgiveness for the rest of your life? Forgive today, and you will find that your prayers are answered. Start here, start now, start today.
