Green Light Medjugorje: Breakout 2019

May 13, 2019 A.D.
Feast of Our Lady of Fatima

Yesterday, the Vatican News reported that the Holy Father, Pope Francis, has authorized official pilgrimages to Medjugorje.

While the ability to pilgrimage to Medjugorje is not something new, in the sense that pilgrimages to Medjugorje have always been allowed, this is a shift from the obscurity which has been put out to interpret that people cannot go to Medjugorje.

This authorization about official pilgrimages, is unmistakable in its meaning, that one can promote in their home dioceses and parishes. This statement does not authenticate Medjugorje, but clearly allows bishops and priests to not only allow Medjugorje pilgrimages, but they cannot prevent or block Medjugorje spreading, nor through silence as if it is a taboo. Bishops, pastors and parishes can endorse pilgrimages to Medjugorje and must allow it’s propagation like any other ministries in their diocese.

#1 Best Pilgrimage Going to Medjugorje

This is what we have been saying, especially since January of this year.

Again, to be explicitly clear, the Holy Father’s authorization is a legal clarification of what no one can object to. Previously, many were hiding behind the interpretation of the 1991 Zadar Declaration, and the November 7, 2013, statement through the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States from Cardinal Gerhard Muller, in saying that people cannot go to Medjugorje. This new authorization surpasses this, while not official declaring the apparitions supernatural.

If one wants to go to Medjugorje, bring their church parish, advertise it in their parish bulletin, Diocese newspaper, etc., then one can act upon the Sensus Fidelium, that we are free to publicly endorse, from the pulpits, pilgrimages to Medjugorje. A bishop or pastor cannot stop one now from doing this, as it is an “authorization of official pilgrimages” of parishes and dioceses.

Pope Francis Authorizes Pilgrimages to Medjugorje

Pope authorizes pilgrimages to Medjugorje

The announcement was made by the Apostolic Visitator, Henryk Hoser and the Apostolic Nuncio. Ad Interim Director Gisotti: “Attention given to favouring and promoting the fruits of good”, but this does not mean “an authentication of known events”.

Massimiliano Menichetti – Vatican City

Pope Francis has decided to authorize pilgrimages to Medjugorje, which can now be officially organized by dioceses and parishes and will no longer take place only in a private capacity which as has so far been the case. The announcement was made today during Mass, at the parish shrine which has become a destination for millions of pilgrims, by the Apostolic Nuncio Luigi Pezzuto in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Archbishop Henryk Hoser, the Holy See’s Special Apostolic Visitator.

Pilgrimages do not authenticate known events

The “ad interim” director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti, responding to journalists’ questions about the announcement, specified that the papal authorization must be accompanied by “care to prevent these pilgrimages from being interpreted as an authentication of known events, which still require examination by the Church. Therefore, care must be taken to avoid creating confusion or ambiguity from the doctrinal point of view regarding such pilgrimages. This also concerns pastors of every order and level who intend to go to Medjugorje and celebrate or concelebrate there even in a solemn way”.

Pastoral attention

“Considering the considerable flow of people who go to Medjugorje and the abundant fruits of grace that have sprung from it – continued Gisotti – this authorization is part of the particular pastoral attention that the Holy Father intended to give to that reality, aimed at encouraging and promoting the fruits of good”.

The apostolic visitator, concluded the ad interim director, “will have, in this way, greater ease in establishing – relations with the priests in charge of organizing pilgrimages to Medjugorje, as well as, safe and well-prepared persons, offering them information and indications to be able to fruitfully conduct such pilgrimages, – in agreement with the ordinary people of the place.”

The Pope’s decision comes a year after the appointment of Hoser, Archbishop Emeritus of Warszawa-Prague in Poland, as Apostolic Visitator for the Parish of Medjugorje, on May 31, 2018.

Both that nomination and today’s announcement do not, therefore, enter into doctrinal questions relating to the authenticity of the account of the six visionaries of what has happened in Medjugorje since June 1981, a phenomenon that has not yet been concluded. Of the six visionaries, at that time children or young people, three assure us that they still have a daily apparition of the “Queen of Peace”, always at the same time in the afternoon and wherever they are: they are Vicka (who lives in Medjugorje), Marija (who lives in Monza) and Ivan (who lives in the United States but often returns home). A fourth visionary, Mirjana, says that she receives an apparition every month, on the 2nd, while for the last two this happens once a year.

Medjugorje, the Marian faith and the decision of the Pastor

The authorization of pilgrimages is a sign of recognition of the good that happens in the parish shrine, where many people come closer to the sacraments

Vatican City – Andrea Tornielli

In order to understand the reasons and the profound meaning of Pope Francis’ decision to authorize pilgrimages to Medjugorje, it is useful to re-read some passages of the apostolic exhortation Evangelii gaudium, the document that traces the course of his pontificate. In that text, the Pope recalled that “in popular piety one can grasp the way in which the faith received has incarnated itself in a culture and continues to be transmitted”. He also recalled, citing the words of the final document of the Conference of Latin American Bishops in Aparecida, that “walking together towards sanctuaries and participating in other manifestations of popular piety, bringing with one another children or inviting others, is in itself an act of evangelization”. “Let us not coerce or pretend to control this missionary force,” concluded the Pontiff.

It is a fact that millions of pilgrims in recent years have had a significant experience of faith on their way to Medjugorje: this is attested to by the long lines at confessionals and the evening Eucharistic adoration in the large parish church without a square metre free filled with kneeling faithful.

“I believe” that “in Medjugorje there is grace. There is no denying it. There are people who convert,” said the Pope in 2013 in dialogue with Father Alexandre Awi Mello, a Mariologist and now Secretary of the Department for the Laity, the Family and Life. In that interview, transformed into a book (It’s My Mother. Meetings with Mary, Città Nuova editions), Pope Francis certainly warned against the protagonism of the visionaries and the multiplication of messages and secrets, but without ever disregarding the positive fruits of the experience of pilgrimages. In the preface to that book, the Argentine theologian Carlos María Galli wrote: “For Francis the most important thing is the Marian faith of the “holy people faithful to God”, which teaches us to love Mary beyond theological reflection. As a son and member, like any other, of the People of God, Bergoglio – Francis – participates in the sensus fidei fidelium and identifies himself with the profound Marian piety of the Christian people”.

It is precisely for this reason that, by continuing to study the phenomenon of Medjugorje and without there being a pronouncement on the authenticity of the apparitions, the Pope intended to acknowledge those who face the hardships of the journey to go and pray in that place. For this reason he wanted his own permanent envoy, a bishop from the Holy See, who was in charge of the pastoral care of the pilgrims. And for this reason he now decides to go beyond what was declared more than twenty years ago by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which allowed pilgrimages to Medjugorje but only “in a private way”. Now, instead, dioceses and parishes will be able to organize and guide those pilgrimages which are an expression of the Marian piety of the people of God.

I am pleased that Pope Francis done the right thing, as many parishes do not acknowledge the visions, and refuse to allow the propergation of Medjugorje.

  2. Amen! Amen! Amen! Keep praying for Pope Francis! May he be delivered from the evil that surrounds him and may the Holy Spirit lead him into ALL TRUTH!
