Cross Mountain

Mount Krizevac

The Cross on Mt. Krizevac overlooks the village of Medjugorje.  It was revealed to be a part of God’s plan for Medjugorje and for the world.  Our Lady said on November 3, 1981, that She prays there often.

“I am often at Krizevac, at the foot of the cross, to pray there.”

“Krizevac” means “Mount of the Cross.” It is the highest mountain in the area. In 1933, the parish of St. James erected a large concrete cross to commemorate the 1900th Anniversary of Jesus’ passion and death on the Cross. During construction of the 16 ton cross, the parishioners carried up all of the materials, cement, sand, water, tools, etc., in memory of Christ’s way of the Cross. The cross was completed on March 15, 1934.

A relic of the True Cross of Jesus was received from Rome from Pope Pius XI and built into this cross. This relic was obtained from the larger part of the true Cross that remains in the Church of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem, in Rome.

Before 1933, and the erection of the cross, Medjugorje endured many hail storms that destroyed the villager’s crops in the fields. This was a tremendous hardship because, materially, the villager’s had little. Upon completion of the cross, the storms ceased, and there have been no reports of such storms again in this area.

Our Lady has said that the Cross on Mt. Krizevac was in God’s design.

August 31, 1984

“I love the cross which you have providentially erected on Mount Krizevac in a very special way. Go there more often and pray.”

August 30, 1984

“Dear children, the cross was also in God’s plan when you built it. These days especially, go on the mountain and pray before the cross. I need your prayers. Thank you for having responded to my call.”

Cross Mountain is central to one’s pilgrimage to Medjugorje. It is a penitential climb that lead pilgrims to reflect upon their relationship with God and what they need to change in their lives to draw closer to Him. Often deep healing, cleansing and peace is experienced at the summit of the mountain, at the foot of the cross, after pilgrims arrive at the top. Our Lady has made it clear in Her messages that it is Her desire to see pilgrims climbing both Cross Mountain and Apparition Mountain.

Pope Pius XI proclaimed 1933 a Holy Year because it marked the 1900th anniversary of Our Lord’s death on the Cross. Villagers repeat the story of the Holy Father who had a dream that same year, in which a cross was to be raised on the “highest Golgotha in Herzegovina.” An entry in the parish archives revealed that the parishioners performed this difficult task “in order to leave to their descendants a clear and visible proof of their deep faith in the Redeemer.” They raised the large cross in less than three weeks during a particularly bitter winter. The villagers began to meet every year on top of the mountain for Holy Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Triumph of the Holy Cross, on September 14th. Under the Communist government of the region, though it was forbidden to have any outside religious gatherings, the authorities made this one exception every year.

Of this mountain, Our Lady said to the multitude of 30,000 to 50,000 pilgrims who had climbed it on June 24, 1986, for the anniversary:

You are on a Tabor. You receive blessings, strength, and love. Carry them into your families and into your homes.”

It is always a moving experience to climb this mountain where Our Lady has appeared many times. Many pilgrims climb barefoot to add a little more to the sacrifice, old and young alike. It is also common to see people unable to walk, being carried up on stretchers or in chairs. It’s the faith of the people that is most impressive to see, among all those who climb the mountain, carrying not only their prayer petitions but their very hearts up the hill with the desire to encounter their Savior.

You will not see bags of sand, buckets of water, wood, iron or cement being carried up Cross Mountain today. It’s enough for most people to carry their sins up the mountain. Many, many pilgrims who go to Medjugorje have never climbed a mountain in their life—but they are drawn to Cross Mountain and with a deep longing, desire to make the climb out of love for their Lord, for the sorrow of their sins, or in seeking the answer to a prayer.

I had a dream about Mount Krizevac while I was in Medugorje in 1990. I was in one of the homes in the village and in my dream a large group of people were going up the Mountain so I drssed quickly and followed them all up the mountain. When I arrived at the top of the Mountain with this crowd the people all arranged themselves in a huge circle around a huge white shape that was impressed into the rocks on the side of the mountain. They stood there is silence. That was my dream and I awoke pondering the dream and thought about how the white shape was a representation of the Eucharist, 12 years later at a Carmelite retreat I was handed a Holy Card that represented the Rule of St. Albert which is the rule upon which the Carmelite Order is based. The Holy Card showed a Huge white Host on a Golden paten shape and the explanation given at the retreat was that the golden circular paten shape represented all the hermits, contemplatives through time that had stood around the Presence of God represented by the white shape, a shape like the Host. This dream helped me at the time to go forward and become a Secular Carmelite as a confirmation I was chosen for the order. I have wondered if this could be the final sign left on the mountain—that would be total speculation. The dream helped me make a personal choice when I needed that encouragement. I hope i can live up to the meaning that was profoundly expressed in the dream,. I believe we are all being drawn into a Eucharistic Age.

Thank you for this beautiful commentary. Today being the Feast of The TRIUMPH of The HOLY CROSS, I asked my Guardian Angel to take me there in spirit and with Mama Mary to pray before the Cross. GOD bless you and let us pray for each other.

June 25,2022, the 41st Anniversary of Apparition, our Pilgrimage group climb Cross Mountain, with our special “penitential rock or stone”. We carried these rock or stone that represent our petitions, our burdens, our sins, our problems and sacrifices in life and left these at the base of the Cross, as an act of leaving our burdens, sins, problems at the Cross; Jesus was crucified on the Cross for our salvation and on the Cross, Jesus pour out His unfathomable Divine Mercy for us all…
On our way as we climbed the steep rocky terrain, we stoped and prayed at each 14 Stations of the Cross, meditating on Jesus climb to Golgotha to be crucified 🙏
Overwhelming emotion erupts as you reached and hug the base of Cross. You let go of your tears; tears of heartaches, tears of joy of feeling the overwhelming Love of God! A suffering soul, a sinful soul will find healing and peace as the living soul touches the Cross.
Cross Mountain is a holy ground as Our Lady of Peace prays there a lot!
    Praise be Jesus!
