What Happened on December 10, 2011
It was September 10, 2001, and the founder of Caritas was speaking on the phone with Medjugorje visionary Marija who happened to be in the United States, in another state, for a few days. He was speaking with her about returning to Caritas for the Five Days of Prayer, December 8-12, again as she had done two years earlier. Before hanging up the phone, Marija said that yes, she would come. She boarded a plane that day to fly back to her home in Italy. The very next day was September 11, 2001. The timing of Marija’s acceptance to come back to Caritas just before the horrendous events that not only rocked our nation, but the entire world, we found to be providential. Marija brought Our Lady to our nation just three months after 911,when the entire nation was still grieving, and the search for bodies in the World Trade Center would be going on for another six months. As it turned out, Marija could not come until December 10. Instead of rearranging the dates that had become a yearly event since 1993, our founder decided just to extend the “five” days to “seven” days. We began on December 8, as usual, but the event lasted until December 14—giving everyone the opportunity to be with Our Lady for five days, December 10-14. Having Our Lady in our midst during this devastating time helped many people overcome their fear and sorrow. With the events of 911, Medjugorje took on new significance for many people. The future, now, was so uncertain. In 1999, when Marija had come for the Five Days of Prayer, it was nothing but joy and delight being with Our Lady. In 2001, for the same event, the mood was much more reflective and somber. But, how we thanked God for allowing Our Lady to be with us in this time.
Marija arrived on Monday evening, December 10th. She had already had her regular apparition on the plane flying over from Italy. Marija relayed to our founder a surprise by saying Our Lady would appear a second time that evening for an apparition in the Bedroom. His family and the community were delighted and overjoyed knowing Our Lady would appear a second time in the same day. They all gathered in the Bedroom and began to pray. Our Lady appeared to Marija at 8:00 p.m. She came happy and joyful. Marija recommended each one present and all their intentions to Our Lady. Our Lady began to pray over all, continuing to do so for a long time. Marija said that Our Lady lovingly looked at each and every face in the room. She blessed them and then ascended back up into Heaven. Our Lady told Marija that She would appear the next day at 5:40 p.m.
