Archbishop Aldo Cavalli, recently named “Bishop of Medjugorje,” in an unprecedented move by the Vatican, shared today that an announcement from the Vatican will be forthcoming regarding Medjugorje and the Jubilee Year 2025. Archbishop Cavalli had petitioned the Holy Father to allow pilgrims to be given the opportunity to receive the Jubilee Plenary Indulgence when they come to Medjugorje this year. This request was granted by the Apostolic Penitentiary under the authority of Pope Francis.

 

An official degree from the Vatican will state how the indulgence can be obtained in Medjugorje. The indulgence can be received as long as the usual conditions have been met. This includes:

 

Sacramental Confession (within about 20 days)

Holy Communion

Prayer for the Pope’s Intentions (with an Our Father and a Hail Mary)

Detachment from Venial Sin

 

In addition to the above, Medjugorje pilgrims who take part in Jubilee celebrations or who dedicate a time of prayer while in Medjugorje must also:

 

Invoke the Blessed Virgin Mary in Medjugorje with the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed.

 

One can also receive the Jubilee Year indulgence by spending time in Eucharistic adoration at a designated Jubilee site (which would include Medjugorje) as long as one concludes adoration with the Our Father, a Profession of Faith, and prayers to Mary.

 

Despite the rule that only one plenary indulgence can be obtained per day, the faithful who have carried out an act of charity on behalf of the souls in Purgatory, if they receive Holy Communion a second time that day, can obtain the plenary indulgence twice on the same day, applicable only to the deceased (this must take place within a Eucharistic celebration).

 

Lastly, the indulgence will be valid every day in Medjugorje throughout the Jubilee Year of 2025.
