horses at St. James Church Medjugorje

Two Medjugorje “youth” warm themselves in the sun in the grassy field out behind St. James Church on Monday morning. These two young horses were out grazing with their mother and stopped to take a rest and warm up a bit. The apparent presence of animals in the middle of daily life has declined somewhat in Medjugorje as time has passed over the last 30 years of apparitions and modern conveniences have entered the village. In the early days of the apparitions the only traffic you saw on the roads was small tractors and horse drawn wagons.

For many of the pilgrims who walked by as these horses were grazing behind the church, they would stop and stare as if these horses were terribly out of place. Caritas community members live with animals as part of daily life, from milking cows each day at 6:00 AM, to feeding chickens, and rounding up livestock on horseback. Our Lady is leading man back to a life more closely tied with creation.

Our Lady said on April 25, 1997:

“…Today I call you to have your life be connected with God the Creator, because only in this way will your life have meaning and you will comprehend that God is love…”

A potato garden just off of Apparition Trail. The whole family planted the garden together in one afternoon. So much of the Scriptures and Our Lady’s messages use imagery and parables about the soil.

Our Lady said on January 25, 2008:

“…Your heart is like ploughed soil and it is ready to receive the fruit which will grow into what is good…”

Can man therefore really go as deep into Our Lady’s messages and Holy Scripture as God wants him to without being closely tied to the soil?

A rooster searching out his daily bread amidst a vineyard that has not yet been pruned for the coming of Spring. How can a rooster help me be closer to God? Something as simple as seeing this rooster in the afternoon, or hearing it crow in the morning can bring to mind the life of Jesus:

“And immediately the cock crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, ‘Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.’ And he broke down and wept.” (Mark 14:72)

How the sound of the rooster must have been a reminder for Peter for the rest of his life and helped him to be humble in his role of head of the new Church.

Vineyards and gardens in between Cross Mountain and St. James Church in Medjugorje. Our Lady could have chosen any place in the world from which to launch this “great plan for the salvation of mankind,” and, therefore, Her gesture of choosing this village that was closely tied to the soil should be reflected upon. God ordained such a life for man after the fall when He told Adam:

“…in toil you shall eat of it [the ground] all the days of your life; thorns and thistles it shall bring forth to you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” (Genesis 3:17-19)

  1. The beauty and serenity of the open agrarian life is still in my memory from childhood visiting my Maternal Grandparents farm 187 acres. My spirit was free on visits there and I learned how labor intensive work was everyday from Spring until Harvest. Then Interstate 95 bought all the farms to build fast transit high speed freeways that were nit really free. Looking at the scenes from Medjugorje hopefully the invasion of Pilgrims doesn’t continually demand more conveniences. Keep it a little heaven on Earth.
